Versatilist OverviewClearly it seems that specific skill sets were critical to success in IT as far as business was concerned. Now it seems more than ever that globalization and automation forces threaten many very specialized technology skill sets. While it seems that business may well have greatly undervalued many technology oriented employees that were consistently changing disciplines and adding to a broader knowledge of technology as it related to business, the Virtualists in the job market appears to now be of far greater value. It seems time that the has come that the business herd may well pivot on these types of people. Versatilist on WikipediaWikipedia defines a Versatilist as someone who can be a specialist for a particular discipline, while at the same time being able to change to another at ease. The term Versatilist was used in an article by the Gartner group and later in many publications including the incredible book "The World is Flat" by Thomas L. Friedman. Where such terms are initially coined is not as important as how they align market forces already in motion. Versatilist - ConclusionThere is still a lot of defining to be done by the world marketplace regarding the versatilist, but being specialized without being location leveraged may well be very dangerous in a world where distance often no longer matters much. Being a Versatilist is no guarantee of success but the faster the world changes, the more the faster and consequently more times one has to change with it. In fact, most employers seem to be more used to having someone that has done the same job or at least in the same field for a long, long, time. Rather than value the cross range of experience and its logical benefits, some still cling to the employee type that has always been a programmer, or marketer, salesperson, etc., not the versatilist. In 2006 many expect the term Versatilist as well as the career path to be greater defined. One may even see a day when certifications exist in various disciplines that will be encompassed by such individuals who not only understand a great deal about technology, but are constantly exploring the possibilities and the means to turn this into true bottom line business value.
